Chelsea stun Arsenal to maintain powerful lead in WSL

Chelsea beat Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday to maintain powerful lead in Women’s Super League. Sonia Bompastor’s side won the game over their city and title rival following Guro Reiten’s stoppage time penalty conversion.

Arsenal were reduced to 10-women after Katie McCabe was sent off in the 83′ minute from the same incident that led to the penalty for Chelsea’s victory.

Looking back at the replay of Katie McCabe’s red card, the defender appeared to exchange words with referee Emily Heaslip immediately after the penalty incident. The official then brandished the yellow card in her direction before McCabe appeared to shout back at her again. A second yellow then followed before the red.

These moments were at the later part of a game dominated by Arsenal enjoying some 54 percent against Chelsea’s 46 percent.

The victory sees Chelsea, who have 34 points, maintain their unbeaten run in the English Women’s topflight and have opened a nine points lead over second place Manchester City, and ten more above third sitter Arsenal.
