Jamie Leweling explains loyalty to Germany after rejecting Ghana call-up

German winger Jamie Leweling has openly confirmed his decision to represent Germany, citing his identity and upbringing as the key reasons for rejecting an earlier call-up from Ghana.

Born to a German mother and a Ghanaian father, Leweling was eligible to play for either nation but ultimately chose to wear the colors of Die Mannschaft.

Leweling made his debut for the German national team on October 14, 2024, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory over the Netherlands.

His standout performance came four years after he declined an invitation to represent Ghana.

When asked about his decision, Leweling simply stated, “Quite simply: because I was born and grew up here. I am German!” He admitted that although he was initially nervous during his debut, he was thrilled to help his team secure a crucial win.

Leweling’s decision has sparked conversations about dual-nationality players and their choices on the international stage, with many applauding his honesty and confidence in representing his birth country.
