Ghanaian midfielder David Abagna’s first-half goal helped APOEL Nicosia secure a memorable 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in the UEFA Europa League group stage on Thursday evening.
Playing at the Neo GSP Stadium, APOEL took control early, opening the scoring in the 37th minute when Anastasios Donis struck a low shot past the Fiorentina goalkeeper after a precise through ball from Youssef El-Arabi.
Just before the halftime whistle, Abagna doubled APOEL’s lead, finishing a swift counterattack with a composed shot to the bottom left corner. Fiorentina, who dominated possession with 64%, fought back in the second half, creating more chances and finally breaking through in the 74th minute. Jonathan Ikoné capitalized on a well-placed assist from Christian Kouamé to pull one back.
Despite Fiorentina’s pressure, APOEL held firm to claim three points, boosting their position in the competition.
This victory marks a crucial step for APOEL as they aim for qualification, with their next challenge in the Cypriot league against AEL Limassol.
