Former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabena Akunnor has talked about a potential way Ghana must follow in order to quench the footballing problems, that have mostly affected the Black Stars, and that will make the country football success again.
Ghana’s pedigree in African football is climaxed but the Black Stars continue to degrade since the last decade as a major indicator of influx of plagues on the country’s football.
There are attempts across all possible spaces for resurgence and former Black Stars head coach Charles Kwabena Akunnor has emphasized the need for Ghana to prioritize the development of youth football instead of focusing solely on the senior national team.
Akunnor highlighted that while the Black Stars are highly regarded by the public, particularly when they perform well, other aspects of the sport also deserve attention.
He expressed concerns that sporting authorities are not investing enough in nurturing young talent, which is crucial for the future success of football in the country.
The former Accra Hearts of Oak coach urged for the implementation of programs aimed at youth development, arguing that the current focus on the Black Stars has contributed to the lacklustre performance of other national teams.
“I think we focus on the Black Stars too much. We have left our youth development behind. We have the potential to be better, and we need to do something drastic with all urgency,” he told BBC Africa.
Akunnor’s comments came after the Black Stars’ disappointing 2-0 loss to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which was played in Libya.
After four matches, Ghana sits third in Group F with two points. Sudan is second with seven points, and Angola leads the group with twelve points. The Black Stars are set to face Angola away and conclude the qualifiers with a home match against Niger in November 2024.
