Orlando Pirates edge out Amazulu in PSL, extend unbeaten run

Today’s win sees Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in 22 games against AmaZulu.

In those 22 unbeaten matches, Pirates have managed to win 13 games and drew nine. This is Pirates’ current longest unbeaten run against any PSL opponent.

Usuthu came into this encounter with a number of players who previously played for Pirates, and could count on their experience and information about the ‘Sea Robbers’.

The players in question included the likes of defenders Abbubaker Mobara and Wayde Jooste, midfielder Ben Motshwari, and goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

Teenage sensation, Nkota, stole the show as he scored a brace on the day. The Pirates product broke the deadlock in the 30th minute of the showdown.

In the 36th minute, the 19-year-old added to the scoreline to give Pirates a 2-0 lead before the halftime break.

So far, the youngster has been featured in four games for Jose Riveiro, who has coached the side across all competitions this season.

Hendrick Ekstein scored the consolation goal for AmaZulu in stoppage time of the second half.

Co-coaches Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi are yet to register a win since taking over the reins at AmaZulu. They took over from the sacked Pablo Franco Martin at the club.

Their first game was last Friday against Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Black Label Knockout Cup Round of 16, where they lost 2-1 after extra time.

Pirates haven’t tasted a loss in the new Betway Premiership season. Currently, the ‘Happy People’ have played five matches and won all of them.

As things stand, Pirates are back on the top of the table with 15 points, three points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.
