AmaZulu duo Olwethu Mzimela and Siyanda Hlangabeza spotted ahead of Durban City move

AmaZulu FC duo Olwethu Mzimela and Siyanda Hlangabeza were spotted training with Durban City this week.

According to those within the walls at Durban City, the club is set to secure both players on loan as they are seeking more regular first-team action after struggling for minutes at AmaZulu.

With promotion to the Betway Premiership firmly in their sights, Simo Dladla’s side is hoping the talented pair will be instrumental in their quest for top-flight football.

Having risen through the ranks at AmaZulu FC, both Mzimela and Hlangabeza are now set for a new challenge.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, Mzimela was promoted to the senior team in the 2019/20 season after serving the reserves side with distinction in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC].

Mzimela boasts an impressive international pedigree, having played for both the South African U-20 and U-23 national teams. In 2022, he was included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the African Nations Championship qualifiers and the COSAFA Cup.

The young goalie has been serving as an understudy of Bafana Bafana shot-stopper Veli Mothwa for some time. This season, Mzimela has only made two league appearances.

In total, he has played ten matches for the club in all competitions since he got promoted to the senior team.

The arrival of Richard Ofori, a Ghanaian international and former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, has seen Mzimela go down the perking order. Ofori has solidified his place as the starting goalkeeper, pushing Mothwa to the second-choice position.

Meanwhile, Hlangabeza was elevated to the senior team at the start of the 2023/24 season. This is his second campaign with the Durban-based side.

Although he has yet to see any game time this season, the 22-year-old midfielder made two appearances for the club last season under the guidance of coach Pablo Franco Martin.

This included one league match and one appearance in the Carling Knockout Cup.

The duo joins Senzo ‘Mbhobho’ Ndlovu, who has also begun training with the club this week, as they gear up for the remaining six months of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
